World Class Training: Taking Ownership of Your Professional Career

For the sixth consecutive year, Dollar General’s Training and Development department was recognized by Training magazine’s ‘Top 125’ for providing world-class training to employees.

“Personal development is the cornerstone of success and I encourage employees to take ownership of their professional growth and have a life-long learning attitude. I am very proud we offer a wide variety of learning and development experiences for our employees,” stated Bob Ravener, EVP and Chief People Officer.

Dollar General was recognized for training and development in the following areas:

District Manager Training:

All district managers complete a three-week Quick Start program led by subject-matter experts from across the organization. The program is a mix of classroom and in-store training. During the training, DMs learn about the company mission, values, and key operating priorities that are the foundation of the Dollar General business model. They visit local stores for hands-on training with proper stocking processes, merchandising exercises, loss prevention applications and how to conduct a store visit. After six months in role, all district managers return for a one-week Skill Build class, where the focus is on leadership and operational skills.

Store Employee and Store Manager Training:

To provide timely training, all employees complete computer-based learning (CBL) modules on the store computer assigned by role and responsibility. After CBL completion, store activities are assigned to reinforce the learning.

Store Managers spend two weeks of coaching and training with a certified Store Training Manager. The Store Training Manager also provides check-in support during weeks 3-8 for the new Store Managers. Store Managers receive CBL training targeted to just in time training that builds over time. After 3 months in role, new Store Managers attend the Retail Excellence Every Day! classroom training. This classroom training helps shift the learning experience from a Store Manager understanding the basics to strategically leading his or her store by driving sales and serving our customers.

Store Support Center (SSC):

The SSC provides various workshops to enhance DG operations knowledge and leadership skills. Every new SSC employee attends an introductory course focused on the operating priorities of the overall company, our core customers and planning.

Newly-promoted leaders participate in a variety of programs focused on communication and managing a team.

DG University – DGU Grow:

DGU Grow is a university alliance and scholarship program allowing employees to advance themselves through higher education. Made up of 12 regionally-accredited universities from around the country, these universities provide tuition benefits to every full or part time employee in the organization. Some schools even offer tuition reductions, waived fees and deferred billing and most provide education benefits to immediate family members. DGU Grow also offers a scholarship program, which is available to full time employees who meet other specific criteria.
